Do you run your business,
or does it run you?
We are bosses who run the show, but…
… a few years ago, our businesses were definitely running us.
- We lacked vision and struggled with setting goals.
- We were working too hard for not enough reward.
- We desired impact, but had no idea how to make it.
- We were impatient for success, and struggled with mapping a path to it.
Now, we run our businesses like CEOs.
AND HERE ARE SOME SECRETS
- We’ve never had a formal business plan.
- We didn’t go to business school.
- We knew we had the talent and grit, but we lacked vision and structure.
WE’VE MUSCLED OUR WAY UP
Through trial and error, and a lot of hard work, we figured out how to build businesses that earn six-figures. And we didn’t stop there – we’re also co-hosts of the popular Being Boss podcast with millions of downloads and are authors of a business book for creative entrepreneurs.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
We developed our own tools that helped us go from “being boss” to being the CEO of impactful, creative businesses that make money, and afford us to live our values, have flexibility, and work on our terms.
WE LIKE DOING BUSINESS DIFFERENTLY:
WITH HEART, INTENTION, + CREATIVITY.
In a way that leaves us to do what brings us the most fulfillment,
while still making money + impact.
But that also has us moving ever-forward.
Where we were
a few years ago…
I had just quit my day job and was creating an intentional freelance creative career … but I wasn’t building a value-based business that had any impact beyond my current project.
Focused on the creative – my strengths were in design and direction, but my talent could only take me business so far.
What’s scaling? I had no idea how to grow my business in an authentic or sustainable way.
My money goals weren’t as ambitious as my desire to be acknowledged as a badass designer among my peers and clients.
I was impatient for success and kept falling in the comparison trap – “why am I not as far along as so-and-so!?”
I never imagined having a business partner, much less a team to help support what I wanted to accomplish. I was doing it all myself.
I didn’t understand how to leverage and convert my free content into paying customers (y’all – I didn’t even collect emails until three years into my business).
I was afraid that if I focused on the business, marketing, or money that it would kill the spirit of creativity. I was afraid a plan would box me in.
I was good at the daily grind, but struggled with seeing a bigger vision.
Eyeballs deep in client work. My clients were happy because I was hustling for them… but I wasn’t hustling for myself.
Scattered – I had a hard time making decisions on how to grow my business.
Poor work/life balance, working more than 40 hours a week, most of which was working without intention.
I was doing All The Things all by myself. My strengths were in systems and processes but I didn’t know how to delegate those processes off to someone else.
My money goals were big but there was no path to get there. At all.
I found myself stuck in consistently doing the work, without ever stopping to look around at what had been accomplished or where I could go next.
I wanted nothing more than to lead my business, and not be stuck in the daily, nitty gritty grind. I wanted to pull back from client work to teach, coach, and strategize.
I had reached the upper limit of my earning potential. Without major changes to my business, I would never be able to make more money and more impact.
I EXCELLED AT DREAMING BIG AND DOING THE WORK, BUT HAD NO IDEA HOW TO CONNECT THE DOTS OF WHAT I WANTED WITH THE WORK I WAS DOING.
Where we are now…
- I’ve gone from working as a freelance designer-for-hire to running a highly sought-after branding agency.
- I have powerful business partners, a talented team, and am making good money without being a total workaholic.
- I can now see the bigger vision of what I’m trying to create and break that down into step-by-step tasks.
- I’m able to stay true to my values, make better decisions, and run my business like a CEO – on my terms.
- I finally figured out how to focus on a growth trajectory that helped me accomplish my big goals, scaling to 5x revenue and a team.
- I eventually quit client work to focus on coaching and content creation.
- I found a better flow between work and life, and now work 25-30 hours a week.
- I even launched a new maker and retail company, using what I learned from a decade of building creative businesses to kickstart it towards success.
We’ve also expanded our success and focus into a partnership together. We decided to publish our business bestie conversations and launched Being Boss, a podcast where we share our experiences and expertise with other creative entrepreneurs. It grew quickly, has over 5 million downloads, got us a book deal, and has flourished into a profitable, impactful, and fulfilling business.
All of this to say: we’ve accomplished some shit. But it hasn’t come without doing the work. And it hasn’t always been easy.
In fact, we still struggle from time-to-time (and if anyone tells you they don’t they’re lying). The difference with the challenges we face today is they scare us – we just see it as part of the entrepreneur process.
We put ourselves (and our business) first, for one day – and we called it our CEO Day. That one day had a positive and profitable impact on our entire business.
To help us conduct our CEO Day, we created + curated tools to…
- Address our money mindsets and financial goals
- Align our values with our business model
- Understand our strengths and weaknesses to define our job roles, and identify where we need to delegate
- Get clear on our numbers, from what we charge to how much we make
- Seeing where our efforts have impact and where they don’t
- Map out a 12-month plan for marketing and making $$$
We’ve packaged up these tools for you in our…
BUSINESS PLANNING TOOLS
THAT ACTUALLY WORK
FOR CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS
WHAT’S A CEO DAY?
A CEO Day is a day that you set aside once per year (though we like to do it quarterly) to find your focus, set big goals, and map out your game plan. It’s a time to work ON your business rather than IN your business.
It’s a day to give your own vision the attention it deserves. And in just one day you’ll have a game plan for the rest of your year.
CEO DAY KIT WILL GIVE YOU THE STRUCTURE + TOOLS FOR CONDUCTING YOUR OWN CEO DAY FOR YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS, WITH GUIDANCE TO HELP YOU FOCUS + MOVE FORWARD.
THE CEO DAY KIT TOOLS
STEP 1: MONEY MOJO
You’ll begin by examining your money attitudes and stories, and by setting a money goal. Because this is business – you’re here to make money with the impact you want to make!
STEP 2: CHANGE CYCLE
Since entrepreneurship is all in the journey, you’ll redefine how you look at getting from point A to point B, and identify where you’re at so you know what’s around the bend.
STEP 3: VALUES + INTENTIONS
Determine how to align the way you run your business with who you are and what you value, so the work you do always feels good. You’ll also discover how to stay motivated by using intentions to explore and grow as a business owner and super boss human.
STEP 4: CRAFTING YOUR DREAM JOB
You’d be surprised how revisiting your job title, roles, and duties can create big shifts for your business vision and daily actions, and in this step you’ll lay it all out, so you can identify your worth and see where you may need help.
STEP 5: BUSINESS MODEL
Get clear on what you offer and how you sell what you do, so that you can efficiently attract, engage, and sell what you offer to your dream customers.
STEP 6: KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
A boss has a clear picture on their income, expenses, and profit, and in this step you will lay it all out, get comfortable with the numbers that make your business run, and discover how to use those numbers to make informed decisions that drive your business forward.
STEP 7: REVENUE + MARKETING
Your money flow is directly tied to your marketing efforts. In this step, we combine the two to get a clear picture on the actions you need to take to create the business, offerings, and revenue you desire, month after month.
EACH STEP INCLUDES
AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO
Each step includes a brief instructional video to clarify why these philosophies and tactics are important for the success of your business and how to put them into action during your CEO Day. Plus you’ll get an intro and closing video to help you make the most of CEO Day for your business.
A GUIDING WORKSHEET
Each step includes at least one worksheet (some include two!) to guide you through the step, and to allow you to get your plans on paper – use them in the moment to move forward, and keep them to review later as proof of your growth!
