Caitlin Brehm 1:39
Okay, so a lot of our listeners have full time jobs and they're side hustling, what they want to be their full time job. In the after hours. We've mentioned many times that your full time job should in some ways, enrich your expertise so that you can make that leap eventually. So we've got a question from Jessamine in the Facebook group. And she's wondering what to do to actually devote the time to that side hustle when you're working a nine to five, she says that her nine to five, her full time job leaves her with little energy at the end of the day. It's something that pays the bills, she really can't leave it. And she's in a situation where it's a really ideal situation monetarily, where if she moved to a different job she might not be making as much. She's found some success working as her side hustle, but she just doesn't seem to have the time to spend on it that she would really like to, to bring it into her full time job. So she's looking for advice on how to set priorities when you have to keep your day job.
Kathleen Shannon 2:47
Can you give us a little more info just real quick on what Jessamine does for her day job and what her side hustle is?
Caitlin Brehm 2:53
Yes. So she's an artist and educator who relies on her full time job and a university teaching position.
Kathleen Shannon 3:01
And her side hustle is
Caitlin Brehm 3:03
her side hustle. She doesn't specifically say But yeah, she says her side hustle is her art career.
Kathleen Shannon 3:11
Okay, so I think that if your side hustle has any traction at all, it's time to start making money on it as soon as possible. Even if it's just $100. I think that not enough people are monetizing their side project, it really still just is a passion project. And it can be really hard to gain the confidence around turning that passion project into a side hustle that could eventually support you full time if you're not charging anything at all. So that would be my very first piece of advice is to figure out how to business model your side hustle in a way that is efficient, and at least sustainable enough that you feel like the time that you're spending on the side is worthwhile.
Emily Thompson 3:57
And if you want to set priorities, ask yourself the simple question of what's important to you. And if this is important to you, you will set aside time and if when you come home at the end of the day, you're too tired to devote any quality energy to your side hustle, make it Saturday morning, or make it Sunday evening or carve out four hours somewhere in your week that you can be working on your passion project on a weekly basis and make it the priority that you say that it is. I hate to say that it's as simple as that but it kind of is as simple as that.
Kathleen Shannon 4:31
So the closest thing I can really relate this to is making time to work out. And the way that I've been able to do that is putting it on my calendar and I make it happen first thing if it's happening later in the day, it might be something that I kind of rationalize my way out of or I find other things to prioritize over the workout and even when if I was working a day job, I would kind of use my workout time as as a way to to decompress or as a way to transition from going to work to going to home. So whenever I've coached other creatives who are really wanting to take a side hustle off the ground, I've really recommended to them taking just one hour a day. And maybe it's right after your day job, you're hitting up a coffee shop, and you're just spending one hour working on your book, or painting or doing whatever it is that you do. And I think that if you can create an establish a habit and routine, around working the side hustle into your daily life, you're going to be so much better for it. Um, I think a big thing, though, that happens for people with side projects, is they feel like they need to devote an entire eight hours at a time to it, or even an entire four hours every evening to it, maybe start small, maybe it's just one hour a day before or after your day job that you dedicate to this, and you're really able to take it off. Another thing for me, this might not be possible for Jessamine, but it might be possible for some of our other listeners is to see if your day job will let you work 30 hours a week where you can devote an entire day to your side hustle. Maybe you start transitioning your work hours and get a little bit more flexible there to make room for the side hustle.
Emily Thompson 6:23
For sure.
Caitlin Brehm 6:25
I think the bottom line too is that if you really are trying to make your side hustle your full time job while you're working a nine to five, working that hour per day to get it started and prove to yourself that you can do it is key. But once you're ready to say, Okay, I'm going to take this full time, you will have to put more time into it. And the bottom line is you're going to be probably sacrificing some sleep some weekends for a while. But make a plan for yourself. So it doesn't seem like a never ending thing that's always going to be a constant in your life. Make a Deal with yourself say this is how much I need to be making in my side hustle in order to make that leap. And it may not be exactly equal. But you can set up maybe a backup plan like this is how much money I need to make and my side hustle, and I'm gonna get a part time job at Starbucks to make up the rest so that I can devote more time to the side hustle and really take it full time through that.
Kathleen Shannon 7:21
Yeah, I think that what you're speaking to Caitlin and just really setting a very specific goal and making it measurable making it time based and holding yourself accountable to it. Alright, good luck, Jessamine. We are rooting for you keep us updated. shoot us an email and let us know how it goes.
