All right, I want to talk about something that isn't very business related today. And Emily, one of the things I love about you is how it kind of mysterious you are you are like an onion. And people have to earn the right to peel back your Layers. And I feel like I really pulled back a big layer the other day whenever I learned about the Dick Van Dyke effect.
Emily Thompson 1:40
Right. So I want to explain this because I feel like everyone, everyone should have this phrase in their vernacular and have a respect for the men to which it is applied. So the idea for this came from I was the kid and like elementary school and middle school, he was going home at night and watching Nick at night, like I loved and they get to Mary Tyler Moore, some Dick Van Dyke Show bewitched all day, for sure. Those are my favorite TV shows. I Love Lucy. Okay, maybe a day because
Kathleen Shannon 2:19
I was a kid going home at night saying what has happened to my favorite channel? Like why does it turned into old folks channel after 7pm
Emily Thompson 2:28
I was loving the old folks channel for sure like old soul for days. So one of my favorites was the Dick Van Dyke Show. I thought he was spectacular. And as a kid, I kind of got a crush on him which I didn't really understand for a really long time because he's not traditionally attractive by any means. Like he's super tall and gangly.
Kathleen Shannon 2:48
Hang on to Google Photos.
Emily Thompson 2:51
Google like Google old like young Dick Van Dyke photos. I think he's turned into a very handsome older man, for sure. But I so had this like raging crush on black and white Dick Van Dyke just is a thing. And later in life, I realized what it was, and I named it the Dick Van Dyke effect. And this is, this is what happens when, you know average looking men sing and dance, they become wildly attractive. And I came to this realization that this is a thing whenever Jason Segel did the Muppets, and I never thought that Jason Segel was attractive at all. But I saw him sing and dance in the Muppet.
Kathleen Shannon 3:32
I think he's so hot all day. So all of this to say it's about more than looks. It's about talent and skills to Yeah, and
Emily Thompson 3:40
yes, and just like the confidence and that not caring this to get up and act a fool if so needed. I love so needed.
Kathleen Shannon 3:48
So there you go the Dick Van Dyke effect.
Emily Thompson 3:51
Now, just imagine what's going to happen if and when Brad Pitt does a musical number. Just think about that for a second. Probably as I should probably not Google that. But
Kathleen Shannon 4:02
he has. You know, this is this is making me think about crushes in general, though, and like how much crushes are driven by how someone looks versus how someone acts or their skills or chemistry or whatever. And I think that there is something happening on Instagram, where things are becoming very two dimensional, and you're just seeing beautiful photos of beautiful people, you're not seeing them moving, you're not hearing what they're talking about. You're not seeing their special skills, or feeling their chemistry and I think there's a lot to be said for that. So I like it. I need some more Dick vandyke effect in my life,
Emily Thompson 4:45
right? I mean, I just think about like all of the greats, like who are like, especially when singing and dancing was just a part of show business. How you know, Frank Sinatra was not a super good looking man like he was in his own right,
Kathleen Shannon 4:58
but I can glean as he's Photos of all of these people as you're mentioning them, I believe, you know, you're kind of right. Like he's not right when I would see on the street and be like, Oh, yeah,
Emily Thompson 5:10
right, but you make him sing and dance and you're like, you know what he seems like a really swell guy in so many ways. So there you go, everyone. That is what I call the Digg fanback effect. It's when an average looking man sings and dances and that magically becomes the hottest guy in the room. I feel like I need to learn how to sing and dance to become the hottest lady in the room. You can, you can do that. I've
Kathleen Shannon 5:37
tried my last eyes. Oh, I'm willing to be a seven or whatever without the right. Did I go high? Right. Seven, seven and a half, nine.
Emily Thompson 5:55
So I want to throw another one at you that I think you'll appreciate you can probably go find it. I once saw Neil deGrasse Tyson doing the dancing in the rain number with an umbrella on his Instagram and at that moment, as if I could love him anymore. I was like, Yes, soulmates right there.
Kathleen Shannon 6:13
We already have a mad crush on Neil deGrasse Tyson for how incredibly smart and sweet and funny and humble and brilliant he is. And now I'm watching Dan
Emily Thompson 6:22
umbrella and I'm done. done yet it Neil deGrasse it doesn't take much guys. Doesn't take much.
Kathleen Shannon 6:31
Okay, I feel like Frank Sinatra's mug shot is super hot. What does that say about me?
Emily Thompson 6:37
Exactly what I always assumed about for sure. Alright. Alright. Thanks for sharing that one with us. You're welcome.
