Hello, and welcome to being boss minisode number 10.
Kathleen Shannon 0:08
This episode is brought to you by our sponsor fresh books, cloud accounting. Guys, I love fresh books because of its customer support. Just this week, we started accepting payments through freshbooks. And I had an issue linking up my payment to the bank. And so we simply emailed them and within a few hours got a response from a real person. And it really didn't feel like an autoresponder, either, the freshbooks gal responding, she actually listened to our problem, and gave us some real troubleshooting advice. But you can also call freshbooks and talk to a real person there too. It's kind of like I don't know if you guys ever call the bank or your cable provider and you're talking to a robot, I always get so embarrassed but freshbooks is not like that you're talking to a real person. So try fresh books for free today. Go to freshbooks comm slash being boss and enter being boss in the How did you hear about us section? Alright, so for today's minisode let's jump in. I want to talk about podcasts.
Emily Thompson 1:11
Yay. I know nothing about podcast, Kathleen.
Kathleen Shannon 1:16
So it's so funny because I feel like I was always trying to like find the next trend, like what can I do now like either social media platforms or all of that and trying to like hop on the next big thing. So I could be an early adopter into that. And I feel like that's podcasts. And so and maybe it's also just the way that I'm consuming content. Now I feel like I've I'm not blogging as much because I'm podcasting but I'm also listening to more podcasts as well. I'm not reading as many blogs. So today I want to talk about like what podcasts were listening to you whenever we're not creating our own. So Emily, you go first like what's one once one podcast that you're listening to
Emily Thompson 1:57
my favorite podcast of all time is being
Kathleen Shannon 2:06
listened to us on repeat?
Emily Thompson 2:08
No, I do, don't you Kathleen?
Kathleen Shannon 2:10
away since having Caitlyn since having our virtual RE DO our show notes. I didn't listen to them anymore. I
Emily Thompson 2:17
don't listen to them. Like once I'm done editing them. I can't like I sometimes I hear well, we'll all hear David listening to it like downstairs. It's an easy way. It's embarrassing. It's so embarrassing. I can't listen to it after it's edited and saved. I don't click on it. cannot do it. So anyway, no, I don't listen to ours at all. Post post recording or post editing. But my legit favorite podcast is ink uncensored. I am obsessed.
Kathleen Shannon 2:46
Alright, I'm searching it right now. And I'm going to subscribe
Emily Thompson 2:50
you should so it's really genius. It's a relatively new one. And it's from ink magazine, which is my favorite magazine. And God I'm such a nerd. But anyway, I love it. And so one of my favorite things about this podcast is it's it's short, it's like 2025 minutes long, usually, and there are a couple of people on it. And they all have their like special like expertises and it's just really genius. They talk about they talk about sort of like what's up and in business, but also in tech. They had one where they were talking about drones and David right now is obsessed with drones and like drone regulations and all it's a really fun thing for David. So they had a whole episode or a piece of an episode on drones. They recently did like a sort of follow up to a story they had in a recent magazine about kombucha like the guy who started like GTS kombucha, which is apparently owns like 60% of the kombucha market, or I guess not owns it, but has 60% of the kombucha market is is a really, really great podcast, we talk about lots of business stuff, and really just sort of like get you into that like, into the landscape of entrepreneurial ism. ship and love it and stuff. Okay, so
Kathleen Shannon 4:05
my new favorite podcasts I have a lot that I listened to you but my new favorite one is, here's the thing with Alec Baldwin. So I recently went on a quick business trip with my sister to Marfa, Texas, and Marfa is kind of in the middle of nowhere you have to fly into either El Paso or Midland Odessa and then drive three hours to get to Marfa, Texas. Now Marfa is kind of known for being this small funky artists town. Beyonce was there
Emily Thompson 4:37
they were like the product store.
Kathleen Shannon 4:40
Yeah, that product Marfa. If you do like hashtag product, Marfa in Instagram, you can see all these cool shots but it's just a cool funky little town but it's in the high desert of Texas, I think. I think that's what it is. But it's so it's beautiful. A beautiful drive. We needed something to listen to you. My sister said Just being bossed because she hadn't gotten caught up yet on the episodes. And I was like, No, I mean, I love. I support all of you listening to us, thank you. But I don't need to listen to my own voice. I was already here whenever we recorded. So anyway, so we were like, let's listen to something fun. So I just did in the iTunes search. I searched for Lena Dunham. And Lena Dunham is the star and writer of girls on HBO. And I just think that she's really cool. She recently came out with a new book, so I wanted to hear a podcast with her, and I came across Alec Baldwins. Here's the thing. He had an interview with her. So I actually ended up downloading quite a few episodes from his feed, including one with David Blaine. Sarah Jessica Parker had one with him. And she talks a lot about sex in the city, which is a show that I of course loved. And through college, he has one with Ira Glass. And so it's just him interviewing a bunch of people. And it's just I mean, His voice is beautiful, right? I mean, it's Alec Baldwin. And it's done really well, because it's one of the NPR or w NYC affiliated podcast. So it just sounds really good. So that's a really fun one that I've enjoyed listening to. It's kind of like getting a behind the scenes inside scoop of that industry.
Emily Thompson 6:21
Yeah, I haven't checked that out. We'll have to add that to mine as well. It's
Kathleen Shannon 6:24
fun. What else are you listening to?
Emily Thompson 6:26
Um, so I've only listened to one of these, but I want to listen to all of them. Because actually, you introduced me to cosmos, like a year ago
Kathleen Shannon 6:35
with Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Emily Thompson 6:36
And so he has a podcast, and it's called startalk. Oh,
Kathleen Shannon 6:41
yeah. So that's actually on NPR. I think.
Emily Thompson 6:44
Oh, is it? Oh, is it? Yeah, I haven't I haven't heard it on NPR. So um, so anyway, I've listened to one of these and I need to go and listen to all of them. Because he's just amazing. I could listen to him speak all day long. But startalk we listened to the one that was Oh, he did one with Bill Nye. Bill Nye the Science Guy. Yeah. And it was just genius. So like, I don't know, whenever I'm wanting to be really nerdy, um, I we like to watch cosmos. But then also, he has a podcast and the one that I've listened to is amazing. And I'm going to listen to the rest of them.
Kathleen Shannon 7:19
Fun. All right here. What else? am I listening to you? Let me look. Okay, so one that I'm really loving right now is called the longest shortest time. Uh huh. Again, it's another w NYC one. But they just have such good quality. But the longest shortest time is with Ellie, Hillary Frank. And it's all about like just parenthood and childhood and telling real stories from real parents. And so I really love this podcast as a new mom myself to hear kind of what's normal, like what other people are going through. And so I love listening to this one. And I'm even I'm thinking about submitting a story like about not sleeping for a year and seeing if I can get on there to talk about my story about not sleeping as unique by any means. But it was just something that I didn't understand what sleep deprivation could really do to your mind, to everything so and just kind of getting through that year. Either way, I'm going to write about it. And I might as well submit the story to this podcast and and see if I can get on but yeah, the longest shortest time. It's really funny and sweet and real. And it's kind of bold, they talk about all sorts of different topics. So yeah, check that one out, especially if you're a new parent.
Emily Thompson 8:49
Yeah, I'll have to check. Well, probably one, check that one out. Do it if I'm out. You're on Academy. I know what I'm doing. I'm gonna live in problems. And so I'm like, Well, here's one that you and I both listened to. And I listened to it relatively sporadically. I think David pie listens to it more than I do. But the School of greatness. Yeah, is one that we both talked about a couple of times. And I just he just does like such great interviews. Like I remember listening to Tony Robbins. And then he did one reason that we recently with Danielle Laporte. Yep. And that was that was a really good one. So the School of greatness with Lewis house is pretty badass. If anyone is you
Kathleen Shannon 9:32
know, when should the I started listening to because on Instagram, a lot of people were pairing us together is the lively show with Jess lively and it's funny because, um, I was looking at her podcast. And so like our podcast has this big red he for explicit because guys, and I was looking at just lively and she's really sweet. I've listened to her episodes and she's such a good interviewer. And she's so positive and I really like her. But then like in this big square next to hers, it's like clean.
Emily Thompson 10:07
That's a shame.
Kathleen Shannon 10:09
Oh, it made me feel it made me feel like we're you know filthy sailors just over here cuz our die she was what I love about Jess lively is that she just seems like a normal gal doing her thing. She's, I think a lot like us. She's just being boss. Yeah, but she's landing like these huge interviews. So I'm with really cool people like Jonathan fields and I just listened to one this morning while I was working out with Alexandra Franzen who I'm a huge fan of so. If you like our show, I think that you'll especially like the lively show. And it's one that you can probably listen to with your kids in the car.
Emily Thompson 10:49
Yeah, because you can't listen to it or to us with your kids in the car. Right?
Kathleen Shannon 10:56
You're gonna have to edit that out.
Emily Thompson 10:57
No, no, I'm fine with that. I have no problem with that. I don't want you to listen to me with your kids in the car. I might throw some shit out. Um, so one of actually and here's another one of our both favorites is invisibility. Leah if you haven't listened to invisibility of yet, holy cow.
Kathleen Shannon 11:15
Go it's another one of those like w NYC. NPR podcasts and it is really good. It
Emily Thompson 11:22
is so good. Like this is that was actually probably one the one that got you. A rock can't speak anymore. That was probably the one that got me most hooked to podcasts is in visibility because I haven't been, funnily enough, whenever we started recording this podcast, Kathleen, I don't think I've ever really listened to a podcast.
Kathleen Shannon 11:42
I remember like, um, you know, asking you what podcasts Do you listen to you because I just started getting into it. As I was getting into the gym more I started listening to podcasts while I was in the gym. Oh, this is when we should mention I actually probably really got started listening to podcasts by listening to cereal.
Emily Thompson 11:59
Yeah, I've listened to a couple of those. And I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't get very far
Kathleen Shannon 12:03
you didn't get into it. And I was hooked. Cool. Good. I
Emily Thompson 12:07
wish I had it. Maybe I'll try again someday. But I think cereal is actually probably the one that got America hooked to podcasts. Yeah, thank you cereal
Kathleen Shannon 12:17
for getting for you have America away. And there's another one that I just started listening to the Sean West podcast. And I think that he is like a letter for a living. But then kind of quickly. I he reminds me a lot of our friend Paul Jarvis. So we should probably mention that invisible office hours live version of our podcasts. And we've mentioned that before. But I'm Shawn Wes. And I just started listening to his podcast and his are a little bit longer like they run from about an hour to an hour and a half. So take a long walk and listen to his but I really like I think that I'm going to really like his podcast too.
Emily Thompson 13:02
Yeah, one more that I've listened to a couple of times, and I need to listen to more of his finely crafted by I'm going to butcher this last name. So everyone's aware by Matt Sharon, perhaps, and Blake Stratton. And it's about like branding. It's a branding podcast. And yeah, it's just a really good one they talk about, like business. branding, how to how to fill out dream customers, not fill up drink customers, but fill out dream customers. And things. It's just like a really cool, quick insight. There's like 2025 minute long podcasts. And they talk about branding and crafting a fantastic presence, I
Kathleen Shannon 13:48
guess. I love it. I was just thinking this morning that I need to listen to more branding podcasts and just kind of mean that's what I do for a living but staying on top of the trends and hearing what other people are saying because I think that branding in general is a topic that evolves as I guess as like our culture evolves.
Emily Thompson 14:08
Yeah, it does. But there's one it's called. I haven't listened to any of these yet. So I have no idea. But I found it and I actually like subscribe to it for you. But it's called you University. Why? Oh, you University. I've heard of that. And it's the personal branding podcast, apparently. So by Michael pegues. I haven't subscribed, I just need to listen to it and you should do because I saved it for you.
Kathleen Shannon 14:35
I will listen to you.
Emily Thompson 14:38
Alright, any other ones? Kathleen? Is that
