So after our last episode, on getting paid like a boss, we had this comment show up in our Facebook group, which you can find facebook.com slash groups slash being boss, I've hit a block, or excuse me, I've hit a bit of a block with my writing. And I thought someone in here could help me feel less nervous. My dream is to build my business to a point where I can move to a country area for a couple of years. And I want to bring my readers along for the ride and be honest with them, about me needing to make a proper income to do this. I'm a blogger. I'm working on a course that I think will be perfect for many of my readers. And I hope that will bring in a good portion of this income that I need. But I struggle to talk about money to my readers without feeling like I'm begging or something. I guess I'm scared they'll all run away. If I talk about earning money, thoughts, tips, kick in the pants.
Kathleen Shannon 2:07
So a few of our fellow bosses in our Facebook group started chiming in and giving really great advice. But then our listener chimed in with this. She followed up and said, I guess my issue is that many blog readers particularly where I come from don't love bloggers talking about making money. And that makes me nervous to share my story with my readers. And that is some horseshit. I got so riled up whenever I read this. I immediately texted Emily and I was like, Can we please do the minisode?
Emily Thompson 2:45
Yep, with an all caps horseshit like that was was really part of the conversation because I and I responded with, I agree that's horseshit. So, really quickly, one of the things one of the things I've learned and I've talked about myself, Coach a couple of times, and I think I think that this is one of those like great pieces of advice that she is like brought to my life in business, her name is Kendrick Shope, you can find her KendrickShope.com, she's fantastic. One of the things that she is that she says that I love is you should never make assumptions about someone else's money situation. And I think that that definitely applies to cells, but also applies to how you just talk to people about money. And so I think that saying that you think that your blog readers don't want to talk about money or don't want to hear you talk about money is an excuse. It's the easiest, the easiest excuse that most people will make, to not do something. And so another one of those sells things is that the easiest excuse for people to come up with whenever you're trying to email them to buy into what you're doing is money. Because you're never going to question money. If they can say I can't afford you, then that's usually end of the conversation. But what they're usually doing is using money as an excuse because they don't under stand some other part of what you're offering. And in that this again, you're using money as an excuse, because you're probably feeling nervous about it in some other way. And money is simply the easiest excuse that you can make.
Kathleen Shannon 4:08
Yeah, and can I just mention that you're not begging, you're offering a product for sale, even if you weren't, even if you didn't create this offering for your readers, which is a whole other thing I want to get on in a minute. But even if you were literally just blogging and monetizing your blog, either by accepting sponsors, or literally having like a buy me a cup of coffee Pay Pal button where people can pay you direct, you're offering a service just by sharing your life that deserves to be compensated however you want to be compensated. So I blogged for years at andKathleen.com and I still pop in there from time to time and it is not monetized that all the way that I get compensated is that I use it as a space to practice writing. So that's one and then once I started brave, creative I use it as a place to tell people that they can hire me. Now on every single blog post I do at braid, at the end of it, I remind my readers how they can hire me, I'm still sharing amazing gifts of knowledge. And so you, dear listener, you're still sharing your story. And people find value in that. And there is nothing wrong with reminding them on how they can buy you, especially if you have a product or offering to sell them that you think will be valuable to them. And so that gets me to my second point is how you spend your money. What you buy with the money you make has nothing to do with the services that you offer, in exchange for money. So let me just say that, again, how you spend your money has nothing to do with the services you offer, and the money that you get for those services. Does that make sense? So I sell braid methods and branding and business visioning for creative entrepreneurs, they get a lot of value out of that product and out of that service, and I can turn around and buy a car, and Okay, I'm gonna turn it around on myself and say, okay, maybe I'm wrong, because you are a blogger, and you're letting people in on your lives and on your life, and you're being super transparent about it. And you will be sharing this part of your story, and you'll be sharing what you're buying, and maybe someone will connect the dots like, Wait a second, I don't want to spend $75 on your digital product so that you can go out and live your dream in the country. That's bullshit. Okay, if Good riddance to that reader that doesn't, you know, living in the country, and so Okay, and so for example, like I've certainly boycotted companies, because I don't like how they spend their money. chick fil a, for example, they're homophobes, and they spend their money for on legislation. So yeah, chick fil a will never be sponsoring this podcast, it's fine, I wouldn't take them because they're on the phones, and they spend their money on legislation that keeps gay people from getting married, I don't want to support that. So I don't buy chick fil a. So I guess that there is like, you know, some consumer responsibility there. But again, like, your dream is not a bad dream. And it's, it's not a bad dream to have.
Emily Thompson 7:23
Now, and people want to support you. And that's something that that I think just goes over most creative entrepreneurs heads is that if you are giving quality content, people will literally like beg for a way to give back to you, for you giving them something. And so a really great way to do that is is through, you know, offering products, services and reminding people how to buy them for us and like currently, our podcast is you can pay us by going and leaving us review on iTunes. Like those sorts of things. People want to know how they can support you if you are offering them valuable content. And so this is just a way to do that. And the people who don't want to support you shouldn't be reading your blog anyway. Like those are not the people that you need to be writing for because they are not appreciating your content anyway, I think I think you have to you have to be okay with giving people away a way to buy you and get comfortable about comfortable with talking about money. Because if there's one thing that Kathleen and I have learned in doing this podcast is people love hearing about money.
Kathleen Shannon 8:28
Yeah, so two things one, in our last episode, Emily, you said in this as an episode number 11, you said that people will be delighted to pay you what you're worth, if you just tell them how. Yeah, so I think that that is really important. And one of the thing is, you might feel like you're being really annoying, constantly reminding people how to pay you. But you're not. I mean, I read lots of blogs, where people are reminding how you can hire me every single time. And I just skim over that part because either I've already purchased our product or I don't want to purchase our product, but I still want to read their blog.
Emily Thompson 9:05
I don't find it offensive by any measure.
Kathleen Shannon 9:08
Another thing I wanted to mention real quick is that you might be repelling some people that don't like to hear you talking about money. So let's say you do want to make talking about money, a part of your transparent story that you want to share. And yes, you are going to repel these people that don't like hearing bloggers talk about money. That's okay. Because you will attract to people for everyone that you lose by being your authentic, honest, transparent self. But if you don't want to make money, a part of your conversation, you don't have to you can still be an authentic, honest blogger without talking about money.
Emily Thompson 9:50
You can but don't use the excuse that people don't want to hear it. Because then you're just selling yourself short for all the people who do want to hear about moving to the country and what that involves as far as like, just money, like, that's a dream that so many people have, like, I want to move to the country, but maybe I can't afford it. You can prove to those people and create your own movement for all that we know it just being as authentic about it as you want and not letting the fear of someone not liking it. stop you from doing what you actually want to do.
