Kathleen Shannon 1:20
Alright, Caitlin, what do you have for us today?
Caitlin Brehm 1:22
Okay, so this week you guys interviewed Laura Tremaine on the full thing, Boss podcast episode. And after you recorded you were chatting a little bit about your favorite non business podcasts. And she mentioned that you should do minisodes suggest things to me yours. So what are some of your favorite non business? podcasts newsletters, apps, blogs, YouTube channels? What have you.
Kathleen Shannon 1:47
Oh my gosh. Okay, so I have my list open. I'll go first so that Emily can brainstorm her answers, right?
Emily Thompson 1:53
I'm still trying to think of some guys.
Kathleen Shannon 1:56
Okay, two dope queens. with Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson. So good. So why do you Why so good. You just have to listen to it. Okay, my other non work related favorite is fat mascara. It's a beauty podcast and just listening to two girls chat about beauty. I don't know I love it. There was a gal at the being boss, Toronto vacation that we did with freshbooks. And she recommended this one to me and I've been listening to it ever since I love it so much. I've also been listening to Biddy Tarot. We've had her on the podcast before
Emily Thompson 2:40
Hey, that's one of mine, high five.
Kathleen Shannon 2:45
And women of the hour by Lena Dunham is pretty good. I also Okay, here's what I've been listening to lately called girls girls podcast. And like these ladies, I didn't know of them before I started listening to the podcast, but I think that they're big deals anyway, they're constantly getting drunk and just talking about whatever. So it's completely non work related, but they're both creative entrepreneurs and writers. And so that's interesting. Another one that I listened to is um, oh, Danielle. Chris says jealous curator art for your ear. I love listening to this one because they really dig into creative process and imposter syndrome and resistance whenever it comes to making art. So those are kind of the ones Oh, refinery 21 strong opinions loosely held. They have not updated as of recording this into their next season yet, but I really enjoyed that one. I also listened to like, really nerdy food and science podcasts like balanced bytes, which is like a modern paleo podcast. And sometimes I'll listen to the ROB cast. Do you know who Rob Bell is? He's like a. He is like a he used to be a pastor or a preacher. I priest. I don't know the difference between all of those. And I'm not even particularly religious in that way. But I really like listening to his podcasts because he's just super thoughtful. And sometimes they'll have like, Liz Gilbert on anyway, I could keep going. Emily, what about you?
Emily Thompson 4:24
Nice. my list is hardly as extensive. When do you sleep? Do you sleep? Is that a thing?
Kathleen Shannon 4:30
I mean, I you know what I was just thinking about this. The other day, I used to constantly talk about how sleep deprived I am on this podcast. And I feel like I've been doing a really good job not talking about it. But partly because I'm actually sleeping now. Nice. Yeah, but I listen to podcasts. Whenever I'm driving to the gym. I listen to podcasts whenever I'm going on a walk in the morning. So I'm listening to podcasts like while I'm doing other things, usually working out or driving I
Emily Thompson 5:00
love that. So I wish I could listen to more. No, I don't really wish that I admire those who listen to lots of podcasts. But whenever I'm driving or walking or whatever, I have to have silence like I'm one of those people. I'm just enjoying not having someone in my head. But there are a couple of things that I have been consuming a bit lately. Not so much. podcasts are just kind of a funny, funny thing of a podcaster, who doesn't really listen to podcasts, which there's a couple that I'll download, listen to one occasionally if I'm going to, if I'm going to work out or something.
Kathleen Shannon 5:33
But this is so funny to me, because I can't create content unless I'm like consuming on that platform. So like, I can't write tweets. If I'm not actively engaged in Twitter. I've got my Edgar account set up. Or like, it inspires me to podcast whenever I listen to podcast, so I'm impressed that you're able to do that, Emily?
Emily Thompson 5:54
Yeah, what you what you guys are hearing here is not like, influenced by anything. Which could be good or bad thing. This is just me guys. Um, so I have been listening to unstoppable though by No, it's actually just unstoppable by Bill Nye, though, while I am grocery shopping, so I'll be walking up and down the aisles listening to global warming facts. And
Kathleen Shannon 6:20
are you listening to that through like audible or?
Emily Thompson 6:23
Yes, I think it is audible.
Kathleen Shannon 6:26
I've been listening to books on tape. You've listened to Harry Potter before on road tripping, right?
Emily Thompson 6:31
Oh, yes. Yeah, we did that with Lily. It is so funny. We did some road tripping over the Christmas holidays. And we were listening to book five of Harry Potter and I caught myself like coming home and trying to like magic things to me. Like I wanted my phone and my first like instinct was to call my phone to me. So I have been listening to some audio books. unstoppables been one that I've been I've been listening to it's a long and hard read slash Listen, because it's like physics, and all kinds of crazy awesomeness. But it's been really good. But really hard for the grocery store because I walk down the aisles stressing out about all the packaging and where it is that all this beef came from.
Kathleen Shannon 7:12
So I don't watch the documentary no impact, man.
Emily Thompson 7:15
Yes,
Kathleen Shannon 7:16
no, this guy who doesn't make any trash for a year. I think I have what I always think about that whenever I look at packaging or anything.
Emily Thompson 7:26
Right? Oh, it stresses me out. So unstoppable by Bill Nye. It's an amazing read and very educational. I also recently picked up the garden awakening, which is an hysterical amazing book about helping your land or your your plot of land become wild again, which is written by I think she's an Irish woman, who was a landscape artist turned turned, like Earth artist, for lack of better phrasing. I picked that up a couple weeks ago and read it really quickly. David read it. We're about to start embarking in some landscaping of our backyard. So we've been pretty consumed with trying to get fungus growing in our backyard, and where in our yard, we could put moss. So that's sort of what I'm consuming and how I'm applying it to my life. I also spend a whole lot of my time cooking. So I'm not like engaging or not consuming content on the regular. I'm usually like out making things. So we're doing yard work. I cook a whole lot one of my favorite Actually I have two favorite cookbooks that I pull out quite often. And what is the 2g table, which is a cookbook written by Stanley Tucci. If you're familiar with him, right? He was devils were Devil Wears Prada. Yeah.
Kathleen Shannon 8:48
Julia Child's yen and Julian Julia.
Emily Thompson 8:51
Yes. He has a cookbook. And it's amazing. It's one of my favorite cookbooks I got a couple years ago actually have a signed copy up out of the bookstore one day,
Kathleen Shannon 9:00
let's get him on the podcast.
Emily Thompson 9:01
I would love to I love his cookbook. I think he is hysterical. It's actually I think one of the only cookbooks that I've ever picked up and read the whole thing. Like went through and read like all of the descriptions for all of his recipes like it's a really great cookbook. I made some roasted potatoes out of it the other day, and then also john bashes, I think it's Big Easy bash, if I'm not mistaken. So I'm in Google that room making
Kathleen Shannon 9:27
some gumbo out of that one.
Emily Thompson 9:28
Yes, making some Gumbo and some jumbo Elia and some a to fe and all kinds of really great stuff. He has a recipe in there for just like the spice mix that I throw into everything. So that's a really popular cookbook in our house, as well as it's actually bash Big Easy Excuse me. Um, I have a subscription to bone appetit magazine, which is always like on my bedside table waiting to be read any magazines.
Kathleen Shannon 9:58
My favorite is darling, but I'm not Subscribe to it.
Emily Thompson 10:01
Oh, I do like that one too. I don't have a subscription that my I have two subscriptions only to bone appetit and then Inc. magazine, but that's a business one, so maybe I can't talk about it.
Kathleen Shannon 10:11
Okay, I do have to share some of my favorite cookbooks, or books about food is they're both by Molly weisenberg. And she writes a blog called orangette, which is still one yeah, blogs. And she also has a great podcast called spilled milk. It's like really short and fast and cute. And anyway, I love all of her content. I love her writing. But my homemade life was her first book, and it is so good. And she has a banana bread recipe in there that I still referenced to this day. And then she wrote a second book about opening the lancy with her husband, which is a pizza place in Seattle. So both really good books. I just love her writing. And I love writing. I love reading writing about food.
Emily Thompson 10:56
Agreed Me too. It's my favorite kind of writing.
Kathleen Shannon 11:00
Man. Well, you guys, we would love to hear from you what some of your favorite podcasts are. Let us know like where would be the best place for people to let us know what they're listening to Caitlyn Instagram,
Caitlin Brehm 11:12
Instagram or Twitter. Both of them are at being boss club. Yeah. All right. Well interact with you.
Kathleen Shannon 11:20
Anything you want to add in there. Caitlin, what are you listening to?
Caitlin Brehm 11:23
Oh, um, I don't have a lot of time for podcasts. But I really love you made it weird by Pete Holmes or with Pete.
Kathleen Shannon 11:30
I love him too. That's one of my favorites.
Caitlin Brehm 11:32
But it's like two and a half hour long podcast. So it takes a while to get there. Yeah, I also send it to dope queens. And it's American Life.
Kathleen Shannon 11:43
So I recently invited my newsletter list over at braid creative to ask me anything. And one question I was surprised to get from so many people was how do I make time to work out?
